Kenwood Basic GPS and Messaging

DataGate has full support for the Kenwood protocols, allowing communication and control of standalone Kenwood radios.

Adding GPS to Radios

For mobile radios, Datalink recommends the use of an external GPS Antenna/Receiver module with serial connectivity, such as the USGLOBALSAT BR355 (typically $35 USD). The supplied connector can be modified, or a simple adapter cable built, to allow connection to the radio's rear DB-25 connector.

Handheld radios can make use of GPS microphones, which send GPS data via the mic connector.

DataGate processes the received data via a connection to a base radio. The processed data is then routed to one or more WebGate or DataHost user screens.

Two-Way Text Messaging

Text messaging is supported via the radio's built-in screen. Messages can be sent to the radio by users through the DataGate server.

The radio operator can respond to messages using the status codes programmed into the radio. DataGate receives the codes, then translates into text using a lookup table.

Emailing NEXEDGE Radios

It is possible to send email messages to and from Kenwood mobiles and handheld radios via an Enterprise version of DataGate server. DataGate acts as an email server, converting incoming message into plain text for transmission to the target radio. Status replies from the radios are then sent back to the original email address.

Any work site can benefit from this technology, which provides a simple interface for email enable mobile phones/devices or legacy dispatch software to connect to radios.

This program was initially developed for dispatching tasks to hotel service staff, where is it greatly decreases radio traffic, while improving efficiency and creating a record of dispatch messages, completion times and responses.
