Much has been said about GPS reports choking the control channel. This is a reality when a mobile radio is programmed with "time slot" GPS updates. As an example, if 200 mobiles are programmed to send GPS reports every two minutes using time slot control, there would be a GPS TX every 0.6 seconds, this would result in control channel overload.
Time slot GPS reporting is extremely inefficient
When a vehicle is stopped at a work site as an example, every timed report
will provide the same data. So why send it?
A GPS report appearing on a map every two minutes means very little, other than
showing its current location, which probably has no significance 90% of
the time.
SMART GPS REPORTING
Datalink's i50 MobiHub attached to a mobile radio solves this problem. The i50 MobiHub moves all GPS and other data to a dedicated data channel, leaving the control channel to the tasks it is intended for.
i50 MobiHub smart reporting provides meaningful information with every report. Examples are;
A) Reports when ignition is turned on and the vehicle starts to move.
B) Reports when vehicle stops for more than X minutes.
C) Reports when vehicle stops and ignition is turned off.
D) reports severe braking, cornering and over speed.
E) Reports other events such as PTO, Emergency lights ON/OFF, low battery and other information.
A vehicle can be polled at any time to get its current location, information which is significant.
